Are You Praying The Right Way?

Are You Praying The Right Way
In the Holy Bible, there are two types of occasions where Jesus does not respond positively to prayers.

Occasions of Praying in the Wrong Way

One is where a group of people ask Jesus to perform some miracles in their town. They asked Jesus to perform some miracles as they wanted to get excited by the miracles. None of them had a personal need or desire for a miracle. (Lk. 4:23, 23:8).
The second is where people ask Jesus to do something by complaining about somebody. ‘Now as they went on their way, he entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to what he was saying. But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, ‘Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me.’ But the Lord answered her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things.’ (Lk. 10:38-41).
Here Martha is going to Jesus with a grievance. But she does not get any solutions from Jesus. But she gets only some advice from Jesus. The real need Martha had was that Martha should be able to do her work easily. And Martha should have prayed, ‘Jesus, I am burdened with a lot of work. Please make my work easy.’ Even though the grievance of Martha was genuine, she did not ask Jesus to redress her grievance. Martha did not have genuine desire to get her grievance redressed. Instead, Martha wanted and chose to blame it upon Mary, and she chose to put Mary also into the same trouble as she was facing.
Jesus did not grant what Martha had asked for. But Jesus chose to counsel her. The meaning of what Jesus told Martha was: Do not blame Mary for your troubles in life; your problems are results of your worries and distractions; Mary has no role in your facing problems; Mary is not the cause of your troubles; above all, the solution you have suggested is not going to solve your problems; stop being worried and distracted by many things, and your problems will be solved.
‘Someone in the crowd said to him, ‘Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me.’ But he said to him, ‘Friend, who set me to be a judge or arbitrator over you?’ (Lk 12:13-14). Again, the person who approaches Jesus is complaining about his brother. The genuine grievance he had might have been his poverty. He should have asked Jesus, ‘I am very poor. Give me enough wealth.’ But he chose to blame it upon his brother. And he wanted to get a share from the property which he had kept with him, thought illegally. Instead of trying to get his grievance redressed, he was worried about criticizing and making his brother upright.
So, instead of granting what he had asked for, Jesus counsels him: I am not going to judge and find fault with somebody as you wanted; that what you have asked me to do; do not lay the blame on your brother for your troubles; he is not the cause of your problems; and what you have suggested is not the solution for your real problems.

Prayer is not complaining

This is the way we generally pray. A wife complains about her husband to Jesus. A mother in law complains about her daughter in law to Jesus. A father complains about his son to Jesus. A son complains about his father to Jesus. A parishioner complains about his vicar to Jesus. A student complains about his teacher to Jesus and vice versa. But nobody tells Jesus his real need. And the only response from Jesus to this type of prayers is some counseling. And all say that Jesus does not heed their prayers.
So, it is very important that I pray to Jesus the right way. If our prayer is a blaming somebody for our trouble, be sure we are never going to be granted our prayer. It is not at all permissible for us to tell Jesus that somebody is the cause of our problems. When we approach Jesus, we should just tell him that we are facing this problem, and we want you to solve this problem of ours. And if we pray in this way, we can be damn sure that our problem will be solved.

The thunder will stop and there will be no more hail, so you may know that the earth is the LORD’s.

Moses replied, “When I have gone out of the city, I will spread out my hands in prayer to the LORD. The thunder will stop and there will be no more hail, so you may know that the earth is the LORD’s. Exodus 9:29

When Moses confronted Pharaoh and was met only by the hardness of Pharaoh's heart, God sent the plagues. Why? Because God wanted Pharaoh to know that Israel's God wasn't just another god, but that the LORD was the Only True and Living God. The nations, the seasons, and the earth are his. All people must come to revere his name and receive his grace.

Prayer...

God of all the universe and of all that I can imagine, experience, or see, I praise you and proclaim you to be God indeed. In Jesus' name I praise you. Amen.

Forgiveness may not make sense, but, oh, how we need it.

High Cost Forgiveness?
Inside church, forgiveness is talked about every weekend. But, when you get outside the walls of church, the reality seems, at times, to be an unexplainable mystery, one that people have trouble grasping.
The latest celebrity messes up and Entertainment Tonight produces an exclusive on damage control and image repair. "Is this the end of the line?" "Will the fans forgive?" Spin-doctors twist words and write scripts designed to garner favor and that illusive declaration of "forgiveness."
You don't have to be a Christian to know that without forgiveness you are stuck. The festering wounds of betrayal and humiliation, the corrosiveness of disgrace and dishonor, and the unwillingness to turn loose of hoarded hurts, lingers long past the "sin."
How do you recover from bad choices and what could have been?
Forgiveness, but it's demanding and bewildering. In the end, it's a choice — an exacting and misunderstood course of action. Some, outside the faith, label it crazy, or even a symbol of "brain damage."
Jesus spoke often about forgiveness. It was and continues to be, a deal-breaker part of His Kingdom:
"Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven" (Luke 6:37 NIV).
This forgiveness is not just limited to the public failures and private indiscretions; it reaches down to all the "minor" installments that have been stacked away in our pain bank.
As I see it, there are two dangerous forgiveness myths that need to be busted:
  • Forgiveness takes away the consequences. Get that out of your head.
  • Forgiveness has to be earned. Forgiveness means you turn loose of this mess regardless of what the other person wants, or does.
Three things happen when a Christian forgives:
  1. God is honored.
  2. Grace is experienced.
  3. Brokenness is healed.
You CAN be a forgiving person, because God has given you the power. You can forgive someone else because God has forgiven you. He has shown you the way. When you choose to refuse to hurt the person who has hurt you, you write a story of grace over a bottomless pit of festering pain. And, your choice not only releases the person who has wronged you, but it unleashes the best in you.
Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you (Ephesians 4:31-32).

Family Betrayal

"Brothers will turn against their own brothers and give them to be killed. Fathers will turn against their own children and give them to be killed. Children will fight against their own parents and find ways for their parents to be killed."

Jesus was leaving the temple area. One of his followers said to him, "Look, Teacher! This temple has very beautiful buildings with very big stones." Jesus said, "Are you looking at these great buildings? They will all be destroyed. Every stone will be thrown down to the ground. Not one stone will be left on another." Later, Jesus was sitting at a place on the Mount of Olives. He was alone with Peter, James, John, and Andrew. They could all see the temple. Those followers asked Jesus, "Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will show us it is time for these things to happen?" Jesus said to the followers: "Be careful! Don't let any person fool you. Many people will come and use my name. They will say, 'I am the One.' And they will fool many people. You will hear about wars that are being fought. And you will hear stories about other wars beginning. But don't be afraid. These things must happen before the end comes. Nations will fight against other nations. Kingdoms will fight against other kingdoms. There will be times when there is no food for people to eat. And there will be earthquakes in different places. These things are like the first pains when something new is born. "You must be careful. People will arrest you and take you to be judged. They will beat you in their synagogues. You will be forced to stand before kings and governors. You will tell them about me. This will happen to you because you follow me. Before these things happen, the Good News must be told to all people. You will be arrested and judged. But don't worry about what you should say. Say the things God gives you to say at that time. It will not really be you speaking. It will be the Holy Spirit speaking. "Brothers will turn against their own brothers and give them to be killed. Fathers will turn against their own children and give them to be killed. Children will fight against their own parents and find ways for their parents to be killed. All people will hate you because you follow me.But the person that continues strong until the end will be saved.

Jesus had warned that his ministry and those loyal to him, could find themselves having to choose between their family and their faith, their circle of friends and their faith. As the hostility of living in a fallen world breaks upon us, betrayal will strike very close to the hearts of believers just as it did to the Savior. We shouldn't be surprised that some in our own family would betray us if one of Jesus' handpicked apostles did the same to him.

O Master and God, please help me to be strong enough to withstand the betrayal of those close to me. Please let me never outlive my love for your Son. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Saturday, September 22, 2012

To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some.

Christ left heaven and came to earth to save us. Paul sacrificed everything to share the Gospel with both Jews and Gentiles. What have we done... what have we left... what have we given up... what have we become... to share Jesus with those we love, know, or influence?

Prayer...

Father of mercy, rich in steadfast love, please give me eyes to see those around me who need Jesus, the courage and the humility to share his grace, and the sense of timing to share Jesus with them when they are ready to know of his love. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Key Thought
We like the "Why?" and "When?" questions, don't we? We want to either be in control or in the know. So naturally the closest followers of Jesus want to know when this great disaster is going to take place. It is not easy to just take the words of anyone, even the Lord of the universe, at face value as a promise that can be trusted. Yet, Jesus says it; and they are challenged to believe it is so. What promises (including those with dire consequences) do you have trouble trusting to be true? Why not share that doubt, that concern, or that worry with the Lord.

Prayer
O LORD God Almighty, I trust you in so many areas of my life. Yet I confess that there are other things that are difficult for me to release fully to you and take you at your word. Please bless me as I seek to increase my faith and my trust in your promises even when I don't have answers to my "Why?" and "When?" questions. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

On hearing this, Jesus said, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick." —Matthew 9:12

Why did Jesus associate with sinners? Because we need him to associate with us! What's the most crucial part of that truth: Jesus' desire to save or our recognition of our sinfulness? Of course the most crucial part is Jesus' desire to save because without him, recognizing our sinfulness would only lead to despair. But without recognizing our need for his grace, his sacrifice for us is lost. So let's praise Jesus as our loving and sacrificial Savior, but let's also acknowledge our need for his merciful and mighty grace!

Prayer...Gracious Father, I praise you from the bottom of my heart for providing Jesus as my Savior. At the same time, dear Father, I confess to you I struggle with sin. I want it completely out of my life, but I find that I cannot rid myself of its constant shadow and its penetrating stain. Without your grace and the sacrifice of Jesus, I know I could not stand before you as your pure child. Please forgive me for the following sins ... and please receive my praise for your gracious forgiveness. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. —2 Corinthians 9:11

Why does God bless us with riches? So we can share those riches generously with those in need and so we can bring thanksgiving to God.

Prayer...

Father, thank you for providing me with so many blessings. May my use of your riches bring you glory and bring others a true and genuine blessing that will touch their hearts with your grace. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Broken heart or broken will ? Jesus can heal them .

Jehovah is nigh to those that are of a broken heart, and saventh them that are of a contrite sprit.  psalm 34:18

In our psalm, we see the righteous having troubes (v.17) and adversities (v.19) .Believers should expect these ___ the Lord says, "In this world you will have troube "(jn.16:33 NIV),and the aposttle paul says , "through many tribulations we must enter into the kingdom of God "(Acts 14:22).But we can take heart , for when the rightteous cry unto the Lord,"He delivers them from  all their troubles"(ps.34:17NIV).We are also of a contrite sprit, we will feel His presence and experience His helping band.

What is meant in scripture by a "broken heart"and by a contrite sprit "? A broken heart is  broken will ___ the heart is seat of both the emotions and the will .A contrite spirit is a "bruised ," hence a "broken down ," sprit.Only when we are no longer higspirited running hither and thigther ,trying ti solve our problems according to our wills , do we obtain  the promised deliverance Then when we are not seeking our ownwills we will be willing to accept whatever we would naturally desire, because we believe it to be the best for us in the long run.

However , some of our troubles are the consequences of our own unwise actions or even of our sinfs , but GOd can and will mitigate them if  , after self-judgement ,we cry unto Him . As another has said "The broken heart (Broken will) and the contrite spirit are two essential charecteristics if true repentance ." And when there is true repentance we will discover that god is "merciful and gracious ,slow to anger, and abundant in lovingkindness (ps.103:8)
